Johnny Rooney has been a Coach as well as Physical Education and Health teacher in Montgomery Township since 1997. He is currently the Head Coach of the Montgomery High School Varsity Softball Team.
Securing the title of 2009 Somerset County Champions, the MHS Varsity Girls Softball team finished their season with a 21-6 record. In 2008, Coach Rooney reached the 100th win milestone and currently has a record of 136 wins and 52 losses. During the 2007 season the team won the Skyland Conference for the fifth time. 2006 found the Varsity Softball Team capturing their first ever Somerset County Championship and that year they completed the season with 20 wins. During the 2004 Season, Coach Rooney and his team won 22 games as well as the Group Three State Championship. Rooney began his Coaching as an Assistant Coach in Montgomery in 1997 and continued until he was hired as an Assistant to the Princeton University Softball Staff in 2001. That year the Tigers finished 2nd in the Ivy League.
Coach Rooney graduated from Montgomery High School and completed a post-graduate year at The Hun School. He received recognition in both baseball and basketball at the Conference, County and State levels while representing both schools. In 1993 Johnny accepted an athletic scholarship to play baseball at C.W. Post College where he played as both a Catcher and a Designated Hitter. Coach Rooney returned to Montgomery having graduated with a degree in Elementary Education.
Playing, teaching and coaching baseball and softball at the High School and College levels has made Coach Rooney one of the most recognized and productive instructors in the State of New Jersey.
Johnny Rooney’s Hit n’ Run Academy is celebrating its 12th successful year teaching young players the fine art of playing baseball and softball.
